Giraffe verses jackal
Casey is the owner of Casey Vaasjo Mediation Services her focus is Non Violent Communication as a tool for better communication and mediation. Casey helps with conflict literacy skills. Casey can work with groups to help get through a specific conflict, it could be couples or businesses. Casey also gives education sessions to support the learning process to ensure future growth and positive experiences going forward within their team members.
Casey talks about emphatic listening, and re framing tools to help with conflict resolution. She shares the foundation of non violent communication (NVC). The bases is speaking how we felt, removing judgement and what are your own needs. It doesn't allow for judgement.
Empathy is a staying out of judgement, taking a different perspective, sensing the feelings and unmet needs, and being able to communicate their experience. Each of these things requires practice to put into place.
Using NVC helps reduce energy. It also prevents you from being insulted. This is not an easy task to practice, you have to work hard to make this work. It is intuitive for us as humans to be judgmental and put people in their place when they are rude.
In NVC they describe the different languages - if you are speaking in the NVC language you are speaking in Giraffe with a big heart. If you are speaking in judgment then you are speaking in Jackal.
Re-framing based on your own needs is the learning curve and challenge that comes with NVC. You have to go through pain to change it, we don't need it to be fixed, we need to be supported through the process. We need to allow people to share without judgement to move forward.
