Sherry has been writing since a young child, however fear has kept her hidden in the shadows. Sherry grew up in DIgby County, Nova Scotia and considers that her home and safe place. The one gift she would like to offer her own children is the sense of safety she felt at home.
Fear has been something that Sherry has dealt with since a little girl. She has accepted that is who she is, and that she feels others vibes, good and bad. She uses it as a gage for her responses. She learned to keep quiet, and not share things because she was dealing with everyone else's feelings.
Sherry is a writer. She loves words, to see them, to write them and to share them. Sherry doesn't want to be the center of attention, but she wants others to feel the power of her words. Sherry has been successful at writing since she began in Grade 2. When she heard her story read aloud in Grade 6, by the teacher in tears, inside she felt a sense of gratitude for being heard, but outside she was terrified with the recognition and the spotlight.
Sherry wishes she could go back to Grade 2, 4 and 6 and allow her true self to shine. She knows that the little voice inside was saying, "I could do that." Sherry wanted to conquer the fear of being in the shadows.
In 1988 Sherry wrote a piece based on a personal experience, for the NS Drug Dependency. She wanted to be a voice against drinking and driving. She was recognized at a conference, where they read her essay outloud. Sherry won the contest out of 300 submissions. She listened as they read her essay, and it was validating to hear the power of her own voice.
Sherry uses writing as a healing process and has boxes of writings. She does not share her writings on a regular basis. The Poem - Bridgewater's Daughter brought her to the forefront again, it was a poem to honor Karissa Boudreau a young local girl who was missing and found murdered. She read the poem at the memorial service, but felt it was more surreal. Sherry is thankful to be the voice, but struggles with the discomfort.
Sherry wants her life to have meaning! She wants to make 2019 the year she steps out of the fear, and showcases her gifts and talents with the rest of the world.
Listen as Sherry shares - Freedom Strong - a poem she wrote.
