Energy buckets, what depletes you and what charges you?
Angela MacCabe is a human resources professional and coach, but the toughest job she has ever had is being a Mom. Her son, Parker is 6 years old and has some learning difficulties.
Angela is challenged with work life balance, as many mom's face. It is a balance of time and energy. The biggest challenge is around scheduling. It is an exercise in planning within her home, and support systems. Angela has stepped outsider her comfort zone and asked for help, but it is still hard. Angela is working on setting healthy boundaries and expectations, while thinking about home life. It is creating an ebb and flow with an employer to achieve the necessary balance.
Angela has taken stock of her resources, who can help, what can I give up or change to make it easier? The answers require reflection and support from both your home and work families. What are the values you need to focus on? What is the agreement you have with your employer to ensure you are able to do what is necessary to help your children?
Angela's son has not yet been fully diagnosed, and she is examining the root cause of the behaviors before jumping to the first answer that is shown. She has become an advocate for her son, and looking at what her son needs at his level, not her own expectations. Parker's behavior could be ADHD or auditory processing deficiency - the behaviors are very similar. She doesn't want to medicate just because that maybe the outcome. She is digging her heels in to get more information.
One of the resources that Angela has found useful is a neuro developmental consultant. This has identified some tools and resources for Parker and shown progress. It is a piece of the puzzle that has to be explored and Angela and Parker continue to seek resources to help him move forward.
Angela reminds us all that a mentor or accountability partner is great self care. Give yourself a break, don't feel guilty, your child will progress at his/her own speed, and that is OK!
