A Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Independence!
Michelle Mahoney was born with Arthrogryposis (arth-ro-grip-OH-sis), which means that there is a lack of muscles in her joints. Michelle has tricepts, but no bicepts, she had a right dislocated hip, and club feet, and one knee doesn't bend, and the other only bends 90 degrees. She was one of only 3 in Nova Scotia with Arthrogryposis when she was born.
Michelle's theme in life is that she is unstoppable! She loves a challenge! It may take her a little longer to achieve it, but she has the same needs and wants as everyone else!
Michelle tells people that she graduated St. F. X. University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts, and she says a Major in Independence! Her Mom was her right hand until she went to university, and it was at that time she learned to take care of herself. She proudly shows her X ring that she earned!
Michelle was surfing with the Life Rolls On Program earlier this summer. An event designed to support people with disabilities to surf. Each participant has 20 - 22 volunteers to make this happen, from those surfers located out in the deep water, to the medical staff in close to the shore, and everyone in between.
Michelle is a thrill seeker and is participating in Drop Zone - to repell of 1801 Hollis Street (a 23 story building), to raise money for Easter Seals Campaign. Easter Seals is an organization that supports youth with disabilities. It is a full circle place for Michelle as she received support as a child to attend Camp Tidnish. Michelle is on the Easter Seal's Nova Scotia Board as well as the Canadian Easter Seals Board.
Michelle is unstoppable! She has worked at Dalhousie University for 20 years. The Occupational Therapy department recently named a student prize after Michelle, because of the gifts she has given to the students and staff of the program.
Michelle is amazed at her own progress - she has her drivers lisence, has skiied, has surfed, has a wonderful husband, has built a barrier free home, has become her own advocate!
If you want to support Michelle - donate to Easter Seals - Team Unstoppable.
