Two polar bears.
Allison is from a small town and loves living there. She has 2 children and loves that they know their neighbours and has friends all around. She works as an adult educator and work place training, and professional development training in the area of mental health.
Allison was diagnosed in 2011 with bipolar disorder. She struggled with embarassment and the stigma of mental health issues. She was in a work environment that was not supportive or understanding. She was put into a place of resigning and felt the effects of discrimination. The challenging work environment put her into crisis mode.
Conversation is the key to helping people connect and plan to work together. 1 in 4 Canadian have Mental illness at some point in their life, however 5 out of 5 Canadians have mental health issues at some point in their life. The difference is Mental Illness affects your ability to live your life and your day to day work or education, it may or may not be diagnosed. Mental Health is our feelings, moods, ability to cope and interact with others, the stressors in our life, our ability to support ourselves and others. Communication is essential to support those who need are dealing with either a mental health or mental illness issue.
Allison wrote a story "Two Polar Bears" to share with her own children why she had to take medication. As children they were curious about why Mom had to take medicine everyday, because they couldn't see that she was sick. It was an answer for her own children, but has been shared with many children that surround her kids. She has been into schools and sharing complex information on child level.
Allison would like to incorporate more stories for children to help them understand mental health issues. She is passionate about supporting the conversation. Allison is happy to offer resources and if you would like to share your story or ask Allison for more information you can reach her at email@example.com
