Information is power!
Adena was expecting her third child when life handed her some new challenges and changes. At her 20 week ultrasound Adena felt that something was off when the ultrasound technician took a little longer and seemed to be looking at things differently then her other two pregnancies. Her mother intuition was correct, her daughter had a problem with her heart.
Adena began the journey of what was to come by studying, her daughter was diagnosed with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This is actually more common than people recognize, one in 900 babies born have 22Q. Adena's daughter was fine when she was in her uterous, but that would change once she was born.
Ellie had her first sugery at 8 days old on her tiny (walnut sized) heart, and was released 11 days after surgery.
Adena believes that information is power. There are over 180 different phenotypes as part of 22Q - and it is the second most common syndrom after Down Syndrom. Adena is actively reaching out and sharing information for other families to help them understand the disease. She wants others to know about the value of prenatal testing as that is what saved her daughter's life. She is actively promoting awareness of 22Q.
