If you see a woman who needs a hand up - give it to her!
Bernadette's dream of politics began as a young girl, at 15 she told her dad she wanted to be Prime Minister. She believes in being an active community member, and taking responsibility for her community, and her most recent contribution was to run for federal office.
As Minister of Rural Economic Development she has been traveling across Canada to various communities and recognizes more similarities than differences. Communities are resilient and look at the big picture, they are not looking for a hero to save them, but a partner to build together.
Bernadette shares her own struggles and successes of living in a rural community. It is something she prides herself in understanding both the good and bad. Bernadette sees that if we want to attract and keep young people in the community we need to have the tools and resources to keep them here.
Did you know that women have to be asked 3 times to run for office, compared to men who only need to be asked once? Bernadette says that she is an advocate for women in politics, but it doesn't stop there. As proud as she is to be the first women from NS to be a cabinet minister, she will be much happier when that is the norm not an anomaly. She is supportive of women taking the lead and thinks we can do better in supporting women in STEM or business or any pursuits they are interested in taking on.
Respectful dialogue can make change - there will be no heckling from Bernadette. It is an hour in question period, but it is not the only part of the conversation. It is a difficult statistic that women are more likely to be targeted in politics then men, but Bernadette says that she looks at the women who have come before her and thanks them for paving the way.
Bernadette speaks of her family, and how each of her 3 children have handled her elected position. It is a family decision and they are all supporters, but have handled the situation differently.
Don't look back on your life and say I wish... find a mentor, ask questions, and take chances.
